Invasive species control

Environment

We deliver professional invasive species control for landowners, developers, and public bodies across Scotland using manual, motor-manual, mechanical, and chemical treatment methods. Our effective, environmentally responsible control programmes accord with Scottish legislation and best practice guidance.

We deliver both one-off treatments and long-term management programmes and our invasive species control methods are selected based on species, site conditions, and long-term management needs. Methods include:

  • Manual and motor-manual control: Hand pulling, cutting, brush cutting, and root removal, suitable for sensitive or restricted areas.
  • Mechanical control: Excavator-mounted removal, flailing, mulching, and controlled excavation of contaminated material, with strict containment procedures.
  • Chemical control: Targeted herbicide application, stem injection, and foliar spraying by trained and certified operatives, using approved products and application methods.

Invasive species we manage

  • Japanese knotweed
  • Rhododendron ponticum
  • Himalayan balsam
  • Giant hogweed
  • Other invasive non-native plant species

Biosecurity Method Statements

Biosecurity is central to our invasive species control works and biosecurity method statements are provided for each project and tailored to site-specific risks. Our procedures include:

  • Pre-works site assessment and mapping of invasive species
  • Designation of clean and contaminated working zones
  • Cleaning and inspection of plant, tools, and footwear before entry and exit
  • Use of dedicated or site-specific equipment where required
  • Controlled handling, storage, and disposal of contaminated material
  • Measures to prevent spread via watercourses, soils, and vehicle movements

Environmental compliance

All works are planned and delivered to protect the environment and surrounding habitats and we regularly work alongside Ecological Clerks of Works and environmental consultants. We produce site-specific risk assessments and method statements and operate in accordance with Scottish invasive species legislation, SEPA guidance and pollution prevention requirements, and ecological constraints and protected species considerations.
